Myth #8. Carbohydrates are the main cause of heart disease

REBUTTAL: The more we learn about heart disease it seems like the more risk factors we discover. Sucrose and high GI carbs are just one of several important risk factors. Certain saturated fats, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, insufficient vitamin D, too much salt, too much alcohol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity etc.are all independent risk factors.

"Nut consumption and risk of coronary heart disease: a review of epidemiologic evidence."

"Based on the data from the Nurses' Health Study, we estimated that substitution of the fat from 1 ounce of nuts for equivalent energy from carbohydrate in an average diet was associated with a 30% reduction in CHD risk and the substitution of nut fat for saturated fat was associated with 45% reduction in risk."
